Who We Are

Ottawa Builders. Built by the people You Meet

We’re Noel and Casey, co-owners of Carpenter Near Me Ottawa. Between us, we bring more than 25 years of hands-on experience in carpentry, outdoor structures, and residential renovation throughout Ottawa.

Every pergola, covered structure, and outdoor living project we build is managed directly by our team from start to finish. We do not subcontract our work. The people you meet during the consultation are the same people overseeing the craftsmanship on site.

We built Carpenter Near Me around a simple idea: homeowners deserve a builder they can trust completely. That means clear communication, honest advice, fixed-price quotes, and a commitment to delivering exactly what we promise.

Our focus is creating outdoor spaces that feel like a natural extension of your home — whether that’s a modern pergola, a covered deck for entertaining, or a custom backyard retreat designed for Ottawa’s changing seasons.

Based in Nepean, we work across Ottawa and surrounding communities, from older neighbourhoods where precision and heritage-sensitive detailing matter, to newer suburban properties where larger outdoor spaces allow for more ambitious designs.

At the end of the day, our goal is simple: build outdoor spaces that look exceptional, last for years, and make you want to spend every possible evening outside.

The Right Material for Ottawa's Climate

Select Materials

We build with cedar, composite, PVC, and pressure-treated timber. Each has real strengths and honest trade-offs. Here is what you need to know before you choose.

Cedar
Natural Wood
Naturally rot-resistant, stable through Ottawa’s temperature swings, and pitch-free, so it holds stain beautifully. Cedar is the classic choice for pergola structures and deck boards alike. Plan to clean and restain every 2 to 3 years to protect your investment.

  • Naturally insect and rot-resistant.
  • Accepts a wide range of finishes
  • Strong visual warmth and character
  • 15 to 20-year lifespan when maintained
Composite (TimberTech)
Low Maintenance
Modern composite decking from TimberTech resists fading, staining, mould, and Ottawa’s freeze-thaw cycle. Virtually maintenance-free compared to wood, an annual wash keeps it looking new. As TimberTech installers, we add a 2-year labour warranty on top of TimberTech’s 30-year product warranty.

  • No staining, sealing, or painting required
  • 30-year product warranty with TimberTech
  • Available in a wide range of colours
PVC (Azek)
Moisture-Proof
100 per cent plastic, no wood fibre content, making PVC the most moisture-resistant decking available. An excellent choice for pool surrounds, waterfront properties, or any deck that sees consistent high moisture. Splinter-free and very safe for children and pets.

  • Completely waterproof surface
  • Splinter-free and safe underfoot
  • Up to 50-year product warranties available
  • Resists mould, fading, and staining
Pressure-Treated
Best Value
Pressure-treated lumber is the standard structural material in every deck we build, and a strong choice for budget-focused deck boards. It carries a warranty against termite infestation and fungal decay, and performs reliably in Ottawa’s climate when properly maintained. Life expectancy of 10 to 15 years as a deck surface.

  • Most cost-effective decking option
  • Termite and fungal decay warranty
  • Standard for all structural framing
  • Can be stained or painted

We build custom freestanding and attached pergolas using premium materials including cedar, Douglas fir, and tongue-and-groove timber finishes that bring warmth, texture, and a more refined architectural look to your outdoor space. Many of our structures are designed with exposed beams, finished ceilings, and stain-grade details that elevate the space beyond a standard backyard pergola.

We also work with homeowners looking to incorporate modern louvred aluminum systems for adjustable rain and sun protection — a popular option in Ottawa for extending the outdoor season comfortably through spring and fall.

Pergolas in Ottawa

What a Pergola Does for Your Property

A pergola defines space. Without one, most Ottawa backyards are flat, exposed, and underused after the first summer. A well-designed pergola gives you shade, a structure for lighting and privacy screening, and something that makes the yard feel like an actual room rather than a leftover patch of grass behind the fence.

Ottawa-specific factors matter here. Snow load affects your structural requirements, particularly on attached pergolas, where the connection to your home’s ledger board needs engineering consideration. Setback rules vary by neighbourhood. Older inner-city lots in communities like Old Ottawa South, Sandy Hill, or Hintonburg often have stricter requirements than suburban properties in Kanata or Barrhaven. We check all of this before we draw anything.

We build freestanding and attached pergolas in cedar and pressure-treated timber. We also work with clients who want to incorporate louvred aluminum systems for rain and sun control, particularly popular for Ottawa homeowners who want to extend their outdoor season into May and October. We walk you through which structure fits your property before you commit to anything.

Outdoor Living Structures

More Than a Deck. A Full Outdoor Room.

The outdoor spaces that actually get used are the ones designed as complete rooms, not just raised platforms. That means thinking through shade, wind, where your grill lives, whether you want seating built in or freestanding, and how the space connects to your interior when the back door is open.

We build decks with integrated pergola and gazebo systems, decks with built-in planters and bench seating, pool-side decks, high-level decks with under-deck storage, and multi-level structures that break up a sloped yard into functional outdoor zones. If your garden slopes, we can work with the grade, no excavation required in most cases.

Hot tub support is another common request. We engineer the deck framing to handle the live load safely, which is something that cannot be improvised after the fact. Ask about this early in the consultation, and we will design for it from the start, not as an afterthought.

Every build includes a written fixed-price quote, permit-ready documentation where required, and the same direct team from site visit to final walkthrough. No project gets handed off.

Pergola & Deck FAQ for Ottawa Homeowners

Have a specific question about your property?

Every Ottawa lot is different. Setbacks, heritage overlays, lot grading, and existing structures all affect what we can build and what permit is required. We are happy to answer site-specific questions directly before you commit to anything.

Do I need a permit to build a pergola in Ottawa?

In most cases, yes. The City of Ottawa requires a building permit for any structure over 10 square metres (about 108 sq ft), and for any structure attached to your home. Even smaller freestanding pergolas may need permits depending on your zoning category and how close the structure sits to your property lines.

Setback rules vary by neighbourhood. A lot in Centretown or Old Ottawa South operates under different rules than a lot in Barrhaven or Stittsville. We review your specific address during the site visit and handle the full permit submission on your behalf before construction starts.

Most pergola and deck projects build in three days to four weeks, depending on size and complexity. The permit process at the City of Ottawa currently runs three to eight weeks for residential outdoor structures, so the full timeline from signed contract to finished build is typically eight to fourteen weeks.

Spring and early summer are our busiest periods. If you want your outdoor space ready for the May long weekend or Canada Day, book your consultation in January or February. We confirm your build date on contract signing, so your spot is locked in.

Composite decking blends wood flour and plastic, giving it a more natural wood-grain look. Premium composites like TimberTech handle Ottawa’s freeze-thaw cycle very well and carry 30-year warranties against fading and staining. As TimberTech installers, we add a 2-year labour warranty on top of the product warranty, which is something most contractors cannot offer.

PVC decking is 100 per cent plastic with no wood content. It is the most moisture-resistant option, making it the right choice for pool decks, waterfront properties, or any area with constant high moisture exposure. Life expectancy on PVC can reach 50 years with minimal maintenance.

A well-built and properly maintained cedar structure lasts 15 to 20 years in Ottawa. Cedar is naturally rot-resistant and handles our climate well. The key is maintenance: clean and re-stain every two to three years using a quality semi-transparent stain with UV protection. Never use a clear sealer alone. It blocks UV but provides no pigment protection, and cedar will grey and degrade faster without colour stabilisation.

The structural framing beneath your cedar deck uses pressure-treated lumber regardless of the decking material you choose, which protects the bones of the structure for the long term.

Yes. A filled hot tub weighs approximately 3,000 to 4,500 kg, depending on size; that is a significant live load, and the deck framing must be specifically engineered to carry it. We design the structural elements for hot tub support from the start when you tell us this is a requirement. Do not add a hot tub to a deck that was not designed to carry one.

Tell us during the initial call, and we will plan for it correctly from the first drawing.

Yes. We work with sloped lots regularly across Ottawa. The deck can be built at a consistent height using a post-and-beam frame that follows the grade, which creates usable under-deck storage in many cases. Alternatively, a multi-level deck design uses the slope to create distinct zones at different heights. We assess the slope during the site visit and recommend the approach that makes the most sense for your lot and budget.
No. We do not subcontract deck or pergola projects. Our direct crew handles every aspect of the build. The team that shows up on day one is the same team throughout. This matters because it means no handoffs, no miscommunication between trades, and direct accountability from start to finish. Noel and Casey are reachable throughout every project.

We serve all Ottawa communities. Our core service areas include Kanata, Westboro, Nepean, Stittsville, Bells Corners, and Hintonburg on the west side; The Glebe, Centretown, Old Ottawa South, Sandy Hill, Riverside South, Manotick, and Rockcliffe Park in the east and south. We also serve surrounding communities in the greater Ottawa region.

We provide a 2-year workmanship warranty on all projects. On TimberTech composite decking products TimberTech’s standard 30-year product warranty. Azek and PVC products carry their own manufacturer warranties, which range from 30 to 50 years, depending on the product line. All warranty documentation is provided at the final walkthrough.
