Who We Are
Ottawa Builders. Built by the people You Meet
We’re Noel and Casey, co-owners of Carpenter Near Me Ottawa. Between us, we bring more than 25 years of hands-on experience in carpentry, outdoor structures, and residential renovation throughout Ottawa.
Every pergola, covered structure, and outdoor living project we build is managed directly by our team from start to finish. We do not subcontract our work. The people you meet during the consultation are the same people overseeing the craftsmanship on site.
We built Carpenter Near Me around a simple idea: homeowners deserve a builder they can trust completely. That means clear communication, honest advice, fixed-price quotes, and a commitment to delivering exactly what we promise.
Our focus is creating outdoor spaces that feel like a natural extension of your home — whether that’s a modern pergola, a covered deck for entertaining, or a custom backyard retreat designed for Ottawa’s changing seasons.
Based in Nepean, we work across Ottawa and surrounding communities, from older neighbourhoods where precision and heritage-sensitive detailing matter, to newer suburban properties where larger outdoor spaces allow for more ambitious designs.
At the end of the day, our goal is simple: build outdoor spaces that look exceptional, last for years, and make you want to spend every possible evening outside.

What Our Clients Say
Darko Lisak If I could rate Noel's work as 6 stars out of 5, I would. That is the quality and craftsmanship -- and care -- that he put into the work on our pergola. As you can see in the pictures, the structure is absolutely wonderful and a joy to see. Passersby have just a slight glimpse of the pergola in our backyard but quite a number have stopped to have a look -- even while Noel was building it. I could see he had fun building it too -- watching him put the pieces together looked like a giant Lego set. Thank you Noel for something that will definitely last a long time as well as complement our solar installation quite nicely. Teresa Dore Carpenter Near Me built a new deck in our backyard. We were very pleased with the work from our initial meeting with Noel to discuss the project to the end result. Communication was timely and effective and craftmanship and attention to detail was excellent. Noel was very pleasant to work with. We thoroughly enjoyed sitting out on our new deck this summer. Regina Ward We are very pleased with the composite deck that Noel built for us. The workmanship was excellent and exceeded our expectations. Noel paid particular attention to details. He is a true craftman, was always here when he said he would be and was a pleasure to deal with. We would not have any hesitation to hire him again for other projects. Aaron M Can’t recommend Carpenter Near Me enough. Noel and Casey were an absolute pleasure to work with and Noel did an incredible job constructing our deck. What impressed us the most was Noel’s attention to detail and craftsmanship. Not only did he build our deck exactly how we envisioned, but no small detail was missed to ensure our deck was beautifully built and built to last. In addition, Noel and Casey were complete professionals; they were great communicators, reliable and conducted their business to a high standard. Carpenter Near Me exceeded our expectations and without question we would look to them again for future projects! Thanks again Casey, Noel, Christian and Mya :) melissa nisbett We are so pleased with the deck built by Noel and his team this summer at our home in Nepean. From the beginning, he made us feel at ease with his professionalism and knowledge. He was responsive via email keeping us updated about the project. Great care was put into the details leaving us with a finished product that is sturdy and gorgeous, and his cleanup was so thorough it was if he was never there at all. The whole experience has vastly exceeded our expectations. The only problem with our beautiful deck is that there isn't a second one for Noel to build. Margarita Ziroldo Noel is exceptional. We appreciate his workmanship skills and attention to detail. He exceeded our expectations. We are thankful for the renos he completed for us (staircase & fireplace) as well as reviewing any problem areas. His talent in woodworking is remarkable. Great communication with both Casey and Noel, never any issues and extremely professional. We highly recommend if you want the job done to perfection. Mellissa Hisko Fantastic experience with Carpenter Near Me who built us a new staircase! We had an old, ugly, curved staircase and wanted a custom “show stopper” staircase. They made our dream a perfect reality. The quality of the work exceeded all of our expectations and the owners (Noel and Casey) are extremely responsive. They are on site when they say they will be. They email back when you reach out. They walk through upcoming work and explain any limitations and timelines when adjusting the plan of work. They also provide ways to reduce the budget to keep costs down. Could not recommend this company enough and hope to have them renovate our kitchen in the future! We build custom freestanding and attached pergolas using premium materials including cedar, Douglas fir, and tongue-and-groove timber finishes that bring warmth, texture, and a more refined architectural look to your outdoor space. Many of our structures are designed with exposed beams, finished ceilings, and stain-grade details that elevate the space beyond a standard backyard pergola.
We also work with homeowners looking to incorporate modern louvred aluminum systems for adjustable rain and sun protection — a popular option in Ottawa for extending the outdoor season comfortably through spring and fall.
Pergolas in Ottawa
What a Pergola Does for Your Property
A pergola defines space. Without one, most Ottawa backyards are flat, exposed, and underused after the first summer. A well-designed pergola gives you shade, a structure for lighting and privacy screening, and something that makes the yard feel like an actual room rather than a leftover patch of grass behind the fence.
Ottawa-specific factors matter here. Snow load affects your structural requirements, particularly on attached pergolas, where the connection to your home’s ledger board needs engineering consideration. Setback rules vary by neighbourhood. Older inner-city lots in communities like Old Ottawa South, Sandy Hill, or Hintonburg often have stricter requirements than suburban properties in Kanata or Barrhaven. We check all of this before we draw anything.
We build freestanding and attached pergolas in cedar and pressure-treated timber. We also work with clients who want to incorporate louvred aluminum systems for rain and sun control, particularly popular for Ottawa homeowners who want to extend their outdoor season into May and October. We walk you through which structure fits your property before you commit to anything.
Outdoor Living Structures
More Than a Deck. A Full Outdoor Room.
The outdoor spaces that actually get used are the ones designed as complete rooms, not just raised platforms. That means thinking through shade, wind, where your grill lives, whether you want seating built in or freestanding, and how the space connects to your interior when the back door is open.
We build decks with integrated pergola and gazebo systems, decks with built-in planters and bench seating, pool-side decks, high-level decks with under-deck storage, and multi-level structures that break up a sloped yard into functional outdoor zones. If your garden slopes, we can work with the grade, no excavation required in most cases.
Hot tub support is another common request. We engineer the deck framing to handle the live load safely, which is something that cannot be improvised after the fact. Ask about this early in the consultation, and we will design for it from the start, not as an afterthought.
Every build includes a written fixed-price quote, permit-ready documentation where required, and the same direct team from site visit to final walkthrough. No project gets handed off.

Common Questions
Pergola & Deck FAQ for Ottawa Homeowners
Have a specific question about your property?
Every Ottawa lot is different. Setbacks, heritage overlays, lot grading, and existing structures all affect what we can build and what permit is required. We are happy to answer site-specific questions directly before you commit to anything.
Do I need a permit to build a pergola in Ottawa?
In most cases, yes. The City of Ottawa requires a building permit for any structure over 10 square metres (about 108 sq ft), and for any structure attached to your home. Even smaller freestanding pergolas may need permits depending on your zoning category and how close the structure sits to your property lines.
Setback rules vary by neighbourhood. A lot in Centretown or Old Ottawa South operates under different rules than a lot in Barrhaven or Stittsville. We review your specific address during the site visit and handle the full permit submission on your behalf before construction starts.
How long does it take to build a pergola or deck in Ottawa?
Most pergola and deck projects build in three days to four weeks, depending on size and complexity. The permit process at the City of Ottawa currently runs three to eight weeks for residential outdoor structures, so the full timeline from signed contract to finished build is typically eight to fourteen weeks.
Spring and early summer are our busiest periods. If you want your outdoor space ready for the May long weekend or Canada Day, book your consultation in January or February. We confirm your build date on contract signing, so your spot is locked in.
What is the difference between composite and PVC decking?
Composite decking blends wood flour and plastic, giving it a more natural wood-grain look. Premium composites like TimberTech handle Ottawa’s freeze-thaw cycle very well and carry 30-year warranties against fading and staining. As TimberTech installers, we add a 2-year labour warranty on top of the product warranty, which is something most contractors cannot offer.
PVC decking is 100 per cent plastic with no wood content. It is the most moisture-resistant option, making it the right choice for pool decks, waterfront properties, or any area with constant high moisture exposure. Life expectancy on PVC can reach 50 years with minimal maintenance.
How long will my cedar pergola or deck last in Ottawa?
A well-built and properly maintained cedar structure lasts 15 to 20 years in Ottawa. Cedar is naturally rot-resistant and handles our climate well. The key is maintenance: clean and re-stain every two to three years using a quality semi-transparent stain with UV protection. Never use a clear sealer alone. It blocks UV but provides no pigment protection, and cedar will grey and degrade faster without colour stabilisation.
The structural framing beneath your cedar deck uses pressure-treated lumber regardless of the decking material you choose, which protects the bones of the structure for the long term.
Can I put a hot tub on my deck?
Yes. A filled hot tub weighs approximately 3,000 to 4,500 kg, depending on size; that is a significant live load, and the deck framing must be specifically engineered to carry it. We design the structural elements for hot tub support from the start when you tell us this is a requirement. Do not add a hot tub to a deck that was not designed to carry one.
Tell us during the initial call, and we will plan for it correctly from the first drawing.
My garden slopes. Can I still have a deck or pergola?
Do you subcontract any of the work?
What areas of Ottawa do you serve?
We serve all Ottawa communities. Our core service areas include Kanata, Westboro, Nepean, Stittsville, Bells Corners, and Hintonburg on the west side; The Glebe, Centretown, Old Ottawa South, Sandy Hill, Riverside South, Manotick, and Rockcliffe Park in the east and south. We also serve surrounding communities in the greater Ottawa region.
What warranties do you offer?
We provide a 2-year workmanship warranty on all projects. On TimberTech composite decking products TimberTech’s standard 30-year product warranty. Azek and PVC products carry their own manufacturer warranties, which range from 30 to 50 years, depending on the product line. All warranty documentation is provided at the final walkthrough.
